Why support our school?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), colloquially referred to as autism, is a serious, lifelong, neurobiological developmental disorder. There is not just one type of autism, but many, caused by different combinations of genetic and environmental influences. ASD refers to a range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviours, speech and nonverbal communication, as well as unique strengths and differences. The number of children that are diagnosed with ASD is rapidly on the rise; according to The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 59 children receive an ASD diagnosis.

Learners with ASD need specialised and intensive therapy and education. Although therapy shows excellent results when started at a young age, it is almost impossible for children to get enrolled in the existing schools for learners with autism in South Africa, as these schools have waiting lists of up to four years. In addition, these schools are mostly located in urban areas such as Cape Town or Johannesburg, meaning that children with autism, residing in local communities, are mostly sent away. Research has shown that the best place for an Autistic child is at home with his/her family, and within their local community.

DS de Wet Autism School provides children from the Overberg region with the opportunity to receive top-quality education and intensive therapy from a young age, while remaining at home.

As we are a registered non-profit organisation (DS DE WET School for Autism NPC 2017/065749/08) and are not subsidised by the Department of Basic Education,  we require funds for our school, our private and highly-specialised practitioners, and for ongoing support for our current and potential learners.

By donating, you make it possible for Autistic children from our community to remain at home and participate in an individualised ASD support program.

You can make a financial contribution to our school in various ways. You can:

  1. Sponsor a child

  2. Sponsor a teacher or therapist
